Chapter 9

The sun shone rainbows through the stained glass windows of the old church as they entered her bedroom. Lamia was exhausted and could barely keep her eyes open long enough to peel herself out of the vinyl before she fell onto the bed and into the arms of sleep.

Nemesis watched her while he undressed. He was not as tired as Lamia and he took the time to just look at her, in the full light of day, naked before him once more. Her hair spread across the pillows in a curling black cascade, her makeup from the night before was a smudged and gorgeous mess, and one arm was flung above her head as if she had merely decided to pose for an artist. Looking at her made his soul hurt, she was so beautiful, the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, and he wanted to keep her safe from everything, himself included.

Gently he lifted her and slid her under the covers before sliding in beside her. He wrapped his arms around her, content to just be with her for the short moments before sleep claimed him. Cold crept stealthily into her body and he held her closer, tighter, in a vain attempt to preserve what little warmth she had left. Soon Lamia was as cold as the marble statues keeping watch over her empty halls, and uneasy in her sleep. He watched as she moaned in fear, occasionally her limbs twitching in an attempt to escape whatever was frightening her in her dreams. More than once she woke with a strangled cry to stare up and through Nemesis, her eyes wide with terror. Despite his own attempts to stay awake, the weariness finally overcame him and with an uneasy heart Nemesis felt himself slide into the void of sleeping death, afraid of what dreams or memories would come.
